York College

York College opens its doors

When the new, state-of-the-art York College opened its doors in September 2007 it became the biggest further education college in the country, hosting 13,000 learners - with a catering infrastructure supplied and installed by C&C.

The landmark 60m campus, one of the UKs largest projects of its kind, was built by Balfour Beatty Construction North West. C&C's wide-ranging 740,000 contract was its first with catering consultants a&e Partnership who designed and specified the scheme.

The scheme included installing Baron cooking suites in three custom-built training kitchens for the colleges catering faculty. An existing suite was also moved from the old building, restored and re-cycled in the new building. As part of the decanting process from the old site, C&C also provided equipment for a temporary service to be provided from the former kitchen during the move.

A new central production kitchen now services the main student refectory - with two custom-built serving counters - satellite fast food outlets, internal hospitality requirements and a busy conference programme. There are three further coffee shops around the campus with bespoke parabolic counters and C&C fitted out a busy retail outlet.

C&C also installed the sophisticated ventilation system with advanced UV filtration technology on the extract hoods keeping external areas free of food smells.
