The £3.2m central production kitchen replaced 15 ageing kitchens - a quarter of the £12m cost to refurbish them all. C&C handled the £740,000 contract to take catering consultant GWP's drawings to construction, and supply and install the kitchens.
The finely-tuned operation has a circular flow, through goods in, several temperature-controlled prep areas, hot area, blast chillers and packaging line to a refrigerated distribution point.
Supplying a range of outlets, from sandwich bars, self-service and full-service student restaurants, the kitchen also provides gourmet banquets for the university and services conference business.
C&C were subsequently awarded the contract to equip and install a new food court at Shackleton Hall student village.
"I was impressed by C&C. They worked seamlessly with our builder Galifords and followed designs to a 'T'. Their attention to detail showed when working to tight 3mm tolerances to produce bespoke cantilevered stainless steel units with Promart - resulting in flawless fabrication to tight timescales." - Mark Houghton, Executive Chef and Food Production Manager, The University of Birmingham.
